Mapping of the role of the lawyer for children in the EU members and their juvenile justice systems
The right to access to a lawyer and be assisted/represented by one throughout criminal judicial proceedings is essential to enable any child suspected or accused to effectively enjoy and exercise his rights.
A good defence plays a major role in the measures taken by the judge and the child’s ability to reintegrate and rehabilitate after the criminal justice proceedings. All the way through a proceeding, the child needs to know how and when to contact the lawyer, what to expect, what to do if this service is not satisfactory, etc.
In this database, you will find all the relevant information regarding the role and mission of a youth lawyer in criminal proceedings among EU members states (situation overview among EU countries, recommendations to ensure children’s rights are fully respected, and useful & practical tools).
