Just for Kids Law is a charity that provides 360 degree support and legal representation to vulnerable children and young people in the UK and drives systemic change. She a barrister in England and Wales and qualified as an attorney in Louisiana, USA where she represented people facing the death penalty. In 2006 she set up Just for Kids Law with Aika Stephenson. In 2015 Shauneen was made an Eisenhower Fellow she is also a World Economic Forum ‘Young Global Leader,’ and one of NESTA/The Observer’s ‘Britain’s New Radicals.’ She was chosen as a Shackleton Leader in 2011 and an Ashoka Fellow in 2012. Shauneen was shortlisted for Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year and Liberty’s Human Rights Lawyer of the Year.
Lawyer & Professor at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of the University of Louvain (UCL)
Thierry Moreau is a doctor of law and a professor at U.C.L. at the Law and Criminology Faculty, where he acts as President of the School of Criminology. As a lawyer, he is specialized in the defense of children since 1987. He is also Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for the Rights of the Child, dedicated to research, training and action, which includes three universities and two NGOs. He has published various books and articles on youth protection and the rights of the child.
Eric Van der Mussele
Lawyer at the Bar of Antwerp
President of the Antwerp first line legal aid Commission since 2008, he also is responsible for the section of 110 Antwerp youth lawyers, from 1985 till today. He is an elected member of OVB (Flemish Bar Association), and of the Youth law Committee of the Flemish Bar Association, as well as a lector and trainer in the OVB 80 hours youth lawyers training, and in the professional lawyers training program and the youth – Salduz – training program. Mr Van der Mussele has been the President of the UJA-Unie van Jeugd-Advocaten, since 2015 and a member of the European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA).
Anna D. Tomasi
Advocacy Coordinator at Defence for Children International (DCI)
After studying the LLM International Human Rights Law (University of York), Postgraduate Certificate in Child Rights (Universidad de Buenos Aires), and the LLB in European and Transnational Law (Università degli Studi di Trento), she spent a year with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs working on “Globalizing Social Rights” in Argentina (2009). She then became the advocacy representative for Defence for Children (DCI) – International Secretariat (Geneva, Switzerland) in 2012. She si also coordinating the campaign for a Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty (officially launched in March 2014).
Prof. Dr. Ton Liefaard
Professor of Children’s Rights / UNICEF Chair in Children’s Rights
Prof. Dr. Ton Liefaard is a Professor of Children’s Rights and holds the UNICEF Chair in Children’s Rights at Leiden Law School, Leiden University, the Netherlands. He is the Programme Director of the Master’s Programme (LL.M) Advanced Studies in International Children’s Rights. He also directs the Leiden Summer School on International Children’s Rights and he received the award for best lecturer of Leiden Law School in 2015. He teaches and publishes widely on issues related to international children’s rights, juvenile justice, child friendly justice, child protection, violence against children and access to justice for children. Ton Liefaard is a Substitute Justice at the Court of Appeal in The Hague and a member of the Council for the Administration of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles (Raad voor Strafrechtstoepassing en Jeugdbescherming). He regularly works as a consultant for international organizations, including UN agencies, the Council of Europe and the European Union. Ton Liefaard holds a Master and a PhD in law from the VU University Amsterdam.
